Eight years of brutal dictatorship by Idi Amin in the 1970s left Uganda in tatters both economically and democratically. Under its current ruler the nominally democratic Yoweri Museveni matters have improved but corruption and embezzlement of public funds is widespread. There has, however, been reported success in the struggle against HIV-AIDS. The country is rated 145th in the world in terms of Human Development and had a GDP per capita in 2005 of just over $300. Life expectancy is 48 for females and 47 for males.

The former British colony of Northern Rhodesia became the independent nation of Zambia under the presidency of Mr Kenneth Kaunda in 1964. Mr Kaunda remained in power until 1991. Highly dependent on its copper resources the standard of living was eroded by the fall of copper prices on international markets and Zambia’s GDP per capita just $630 in 2005 though it is projected to rise considerably. Rated 165th in the world in terms of Human Development, life expectancy for females is 37 for females and 38 for males largely due to a high incidence of HIV-AIDS.

Once a beacon of hope for independent African status, Zimbabwe under increasingly despotic rule by president Robert Mugabe has reached a crisis point in its history. Under Mugabe’s early rule industry and agriculture showed promise of prosperity while Zimbabweans became amongst the best-educated peoples of southern Africa. Initial signs of despotism were shown in military actions against the minority Ndebele population in the south and more recently the country has been riven by civil strife and the near-collapse of its economy. Pressure behind the scenes from South Africa and its president Mr Thabo Mbeki have yet to show results. Zimbabwe is ranked 151st for Human Development and had a GDP per capita of $388 in 2005. The low life expectancy of 38 for females and 40 for males is linked to the prevalence of HIV-AIDS.
